Some products can't be added to our source catalog or showcased in the product catalog on your website. For some of these products, we can build an informational department page; for others, we're unable to include them on your site at all. This article explains which products are restricted, why, and other ways you can let customers know you carry them in-store.
Which products are restricted?
We are currently unable to add products (UPC-based or SKU-based) in any of the following categories to our source catalog. This applies to every site, whether your site is informational only (products shown in an online catalog but not for sale) or full e-commerce with a working cart:
- CBD products
- Hemp and hemp-derived products
- Firearms
- Firearm magazines
- Ammunition
How these products can appear on your site depends on the category:
Product category | Added to source catalog | Informational department page |
|---|---|---|
Firearms, firearm magazines, ammunition | No | Yes, with the guidelines below |
CBD, hemp, and hemp-derived products | No | No |
Shopify can change its policies at any time, and this list may change as a result. If you're unsure whether a product falls into one of these categories, please reach out before requesting it be added. Shopify makes its own decisions about which sites it restricts or shuts down. While we follow these guidelines to reduce risk, we are not responsible or if Shopify restricts, suspends, or shuts down your site or Shopify Payments account, including over content you requested.
Why can't these products be added?
Shopify Payments does not allow these types of products to be purchased through its payment processing. Because your site runs on Shopify with an active cart and Shopify Payments, selling these products puts your entire site at risk.
Shopify's risk team reviews site content, not just sales. We've seen sites in the past get fully shut down by Shopify over restricted-product content, and getting them back up was a long and difficult process.
Can I add an informational page for firearms and ammunition?
Yes, with some important considerations. Our team can create an informational department page letting customers know you carry firearms, firearm magazines, and ammunition in-store. Before requesting one, please review the notes below: these pages still carry some risk, and we recommend getting confirmation from Shopify in writing first.
To keep your site within Shopify's guidelines, these pages are informational only:
- No products, UPCs, or product listings
- No prices
- No add to cart, buy, reserve, or hold options, and no forms to order or request specific items
- General department information only, such as the categories and brands you carry, in-store services, and an invitation to visit or call the store
These guidelines are what keep the page informational, so we can't make exceptions to them.
Important: these pages are not zero risk. Following these guidelines lowers the risk, but it doesn't remove it. Shopify's policies don't explicitly approve informational pages for these products, and Shopify's risk team makes its own judgment when it reviews a site, so your site could still be flagged.
Recommended: get confirmation from Shopify in writing first. For extra assurance, we recommend contacting Shopify Support before requesting a firearms or ammunition page, and keeping their answer in writing:
- Go to the Shopify Help Center at help.shopify.com and log in with your store account.
- Choose the option to contact support. You'll usually start with Shopify's AI assistant; ask to chat with a human advisor.
- Ask: "My store uses Shopify Payments. Can I add an informational department page stating that we carry firearms, firearm magazines, and ammunition in-store, with no products, prices, or purchase options on the page?"
- Save a copy of the conversation, such as screenshots or a chat transcript if one is offered.
- Include Shopify's response when you submit your page request to NMR Technical Support.
Can I add an informational page for CBD or hemp products?
No. We strongly advise against it, and our team will not build these pages. Even without a checkout option on that page, your site as a whole still has an active cart and payment processing, so the shutdown risk still applies.
This includes landing pages, department pages, or product showcases that list CBD or hemp products as available in-store only.
How else can I promote these products?
These options let customers know what you carry while keeping it off your Shopify site entirely. They work for all restricted products, and are the only options for CBD and hemp products:
- In-store signage
- Social media
- Email marketing
- Newspaper or radio advertising
Questions?
If you have questions about a specific product or this policy, please submit a ticket to NMR Technical Support and our team will be happy to help. For questions about Shopify's own policies or how they apply to your store, you can also contact Shopify Support directly through the Shopify Help Center at help.shopify.com.
